Red Stripe’s namesake beer is an iconic pale amber and a staple diet of Canadians holidaying in Jamaica. I must admit I was wondering what a Jamaican brewer is doing brewing a stout. I didn’t picture myself quaffing a strong stout on the beach or on a “chilly” 75⁰ F* Jamaican evening.
And why only 10 ounces.* Even less volume than Corona and certainly less than our one pint* International tastings! It looks like a stout shooter.
So this tasting was driven more by a sense of curiosity rather than looking forward to this mini stout. My expectations were low.
This little dragon poured dark dark with minimal head. Very little aroma, and very little beer! Only half a glass. Nice first swig, a bit of a fizzy finish. Nice and smooth, surprising for such a strong brew. Good flavour, the fizz fizzled out to leave a sweet finish. A sweet finish, how can that be for a strong black stout? Strong yet smooth, no bite or bitter. What a nice surprise this stout is. I wish I had two of them so I could fill my glass.
