The teeter totter, the yin and yang of the playground. I don’t remember my childhood experiences with the teeter totter having anything to do with a fine balance, quite the opposite in fact. The lighter yin participant stranded in space until the yang participant administers those spine compressing bumps. * It’s no wonder baby boomers have back problems.
I had sampled a Fine Balance imperial stout at the Flowfest and had to tap out, it was s’more than I could handle. But their Oats & Cream IPA attained super suds stardom so I was looking forward to more oats with this oatmeal stout.
A heady black pour quickly settled into a beauty stout presentation. Black as black can be, with a frothy tan head. A mild roasted malt aroma, no doubt it’s a stout. First taste is creamy and very sweet, maple syrup sweet.** Not quite off the chart sweet as long as you have a large chart. I was expecting/hoping for some oat producing creaminess but the not so subtle sweetness took me off guard. There is some roasted malt in the background, and once you navigate through the sweet you end up with flat dry mild bitters on the finish.
I didn’t lower expectations, I reframed them. A tasty dessert stout, not a fine balance or even balanced at all for that matter, but that’s fine.
