This Boréale bitter bear from Montreal is on the hunt for hops and it looks like he’s found them. Lots of them. A heapin’ helpin’ of hops. They tell us that this IPA has an “unmistakable bitterness” and they ain’t lyin’. They tell us that this beer “celebrates bitterness” and we can agree on that. They ask us if we have “a sweet spot for bitterness”, a statement which appears to me to be bordering on oxymoronic. They say that the hops add “soporific properties” and if soporific * has something to do with this beer being bitter I would tend to agree to that statement as well. You may see a theme emerging.
An amber shade of orange, bright white head in place. My sniffer was on a work to rule campaign last night, which means as a rule it wasn’t working. The taste of citrus grapefruit juice went immediately into major bitters. A salty snack for the save. The salty snack was not successful. Buckets of bitters. I think the IBU of 50 is about 50 short. The juice was nice but this bitter bear was barely bearable. I enjoy bitters as much or most likely more than the next guy, but this was an over-the-top full frontal assault and beyond my level of bitter enjoyment. That’s one bitter bear you’ve got there.
Boréale’s pilsner was seaside super suds, but buyer beware, this bear of a beer was a bitter beast.
