The Classic German Malt Smoothie

Hofbräu Original

Hofbräu München

5.1% Alcohol

Fun fact, did you know the legal drinking age in Germany is 16,* but you have to be 18 to get your driver’s license! If you are under 18 in Germany you are auto banned! I guess that gives you two years to learn how to drink responsibly before you get behind the wheel?

This German intro is a segue to our brew review today. We did some Oktoberfesting with Hofbräu a while back but now we have in hand one big ol’ bottle of Hofbräu Original Lager to do our whistle wetting. Purity laws in play, I can hear the cow bells on the mountainside as I pour this tall frosty International 500 ml bonus beer Bavarian beauty.

A golden clear pour, with a skim of a slim head. A fresh malt aroma and nothin’ but. First taste is a major malter with a slightly crisp finish and aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel. What immediately comes to mind is BIG SWIGGER!  And so it is. The minimal crisp finish rides into the sunset, leaving a full malt bread, very affable and quaffable big swig lager.  The basic classic lager, smooth as a smoothie.

*Editor’s Comment: In Germany 16 is the legal drinking age for beer and wine, but you must be 18 to indulge in hard liquor. In countries that don’t ban alcohol entirely, the USA is among the highest legal drinking ages at 21. The lowest drinking ageis in Burkina Faso where once you turn 13 you can drink alcohol legally.
