Fish On

Ok ice fishermen, the jig is up. We know what you’re up to. No one really catches fish through the ice. It’s just an excuse for some quality time apart. One than two brew in the fist rather than having anything to do with that to do list, a list that today won’t exist or even be missed.

Whitewater tell us that nothing is sweeter than a minnow jig and hole-hopping on the ice. Three seasons of the year I’m the first one on the lake and the last one in, and I toast the one that got away to be caught another day with a frosty cold brewski. That fourth season is reserved for cheering on the Leafs from my big screen facing armchair. The only ice fishing I do is out of my beer fridge freezer.

As far as Whitewater goes, I was surprised to see how many of their brews we have reviewed over the years.* The Ottawa River rafting crafter’s Farmer’s Daughter was one of our earliest reviews, and a tricky one. You see Farmer Steve is an old buddy of mine and the sensitive type so I didn’t want to offend him with any Farmer’s daughter jokes. So, I had to check with him first. I asked him “Do you have any daughters Farmer Steve?”  He replied, “None that I know of.” Well, that was good enough for me.

As far as this pour goes, no white water here. It’s a dark black and contemplative still water pour, with a touch of froth to whiten the waters. The malt roast and touch of vanilla aroma smells very toasty tasty. First taste is mainly the malt roast with a dram of coffee and a smooth semi-sweet finish provided by some subtle vanilla flavourings. No bitters adds to the smoothness. Too much vanilla can be the scourge of any brew but this one is nice, they got the white bean just right. Not a creamy nitro but a nice full mouthfeel. Porters are usually a swig and savour but this one went down pretty quick. No time for long goodbyes.

I’m not freezing my bait off in a ramshackle hut over white water, but I am dancing a jig for this tasty smooth and sweet treat of a porter.

*Editor’s Comment: There have been a dozen Whitewater reviews to date, and seven super suds status suds including this one.
