The King or a Pretender?

King Pilsner

Thornbury Craft Co.

4.8% Alcohol

Martin Luther King, Elvis, BB King, King Kong, Charles. There are many that are well deserving to wear the title King. This brew isn’t one of them. But before I get ahead of myself.

Long drive yesterday and at one point I got stuck in a geriatric convoy with a bunch of blue hairs and chrome domes older than Farmer Steve and all driving the speed limit. Me and Sammy Hagar* both agree that’s there’s nothing worse on the highway than getting stuck behind a law-abiding citizen in a no passing lane. As George Carlin once said “anyone driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac”. Long drive, frayed nerves, sounds like I am on the brink of a drink.

Constipated Lion vs. Smiling Pig

Eager and deserving of a nice frosty cold one, I pour myself a King Brewery pilsner. Wait a minute, this is a Thornbury Brewery brew.  What’s going on here?** What’s with the constipated lion on the can! No Clark? Where’s the pig?

And not just a pilsner, not even a premium pilsner, but an ultra-premium pilsner no less. A powerful thirst coupled with hopes higher than Denver leads to an escalated and inflated anticipation. Unfortunately that balloon is about to burst.

A bright golden scepter of a pour with a slim white crown. Malt and crisp aroma, but at the same time some floral in there too. The very looked forward to sky high first swig brings me back to earth quickly. A mild malt with a bit of an acidic finish, the floral and spicy combo is trying to be crisp but maybe trying too hard? It’s that harsh aspirin taste you get sometimes. As it evolves there are the occasional hints of the acid bitter fading but still that off aspirin taste makes for a harsh finish. Instead of the classic pilsner crisp we have an unhappy ending. I have enjoyed a number of Thornbury brews but this one just didn’t work for me. Not a King, just a pretender to the throne.

*Editor’s Comment: Sammy Hagar wrote and recorded the song “I Can’t Drive 55” in 1984 right after getting ticketed for speeding. A that time a National maximum 55 mph speed limit had been made into law in the USA.

**Editor’s Comment: Thornbury Brewery is located on King Street in Toronto.

Final Rating: They Said Ultra-Premium but they were Lion at 11 out of 20
