jake rousing the rabble.

Day 2 at the Ontario Craft Brewers conference and right out of the gate, Jake Karls takes the cake, or the chocolate squares at least * After a sociable or two the evening before some of the crowd were singing The Orange Juice Blues ** but he roused the rabble with a raucous keynote. Jake’s talk about Mid-Day Squares had me energized for a mid-day brewski, and that energy culminated in a visit to the bar.  This rough and ready segue is an intro to the brew of the review, Rabble Rouser American IPA.

Tooth and Nail is not a combination dentistry mani pedi gift card or even a veterinary clinic, but an Ottawa based brewer in the house at the big beer conference. Here at COMDB we’ve sampled a Tooth and Nail but have never reviewed one. “How can that be?” you ask yourself. “Be it can” replies Yoda. At Flowfest I tried their Premio Kellerpils which I enjoyed, but being the third of a number of 5 ounce samplings I restricted my comments to “I would have liked more”.

The Niagara College Teaching Brewery student/bartender*** popped the top on a Rabble Rouser, he poured, I scored. A clear golden pour that was darker than most IPAs, the antithesis of a hazy IPA. Some bubbles heading headward towards a nice foamy froth. Mild fruit and hops on the nose.

The first taste was stone fruit, hops, and fizz with some bitters and a fruity finish. Busy and tasty. It has a middlin’ mouthfeel, not light but not creamy either. The bitters are present through the whole tasting, not just at the end. They are more pronounced with a big swig, I assume it is a high IBU rating. It is bitters forward, not quite balanced but no intention of being so. The fruit is always there but not overbearing; the bitters are the main attraction. Very tasty.

*Editor’s Comment: Jake Karls is one of the founders of Mid-Day Squares, a protein fibre chocolate snack that went from a home-based startup to a major manufacturer with distribution across Canada and the US.

**Editor’s Comment: “I had a hard time waking this morning….” Richard Manuel of The Band wrote the song The Orange Juice Blues (Blues for Breakfast) and Dylan and The Band recorded it on the 1975 album The Basement Tapes.

***Editor’s Comment: A great feature of the conference was the attendance of a number of brewery students and faculty from Niagara College Teaching Brewery, the future of the industry. They were serving beers and quite possibly sampling one or two while they were at it.
