The Wait is Over

Old Town Vienna

The Grist Craft Kitchen and Brewery

5.3% Alcohol

No reservation, no problem. A spur of the moment dinner out with the Missus and one of her favourites is The Grist. Some breweries have restaurants. The Grist is a restaurant that has a brewery, and a pretty good one from my past samplings. Quickly seated and settled into our table for two, time to peruse the Grist list. My preferred dinner pairing is beer and me and it seems we have come to the right place.

Tonight’s the night!

As I scan the list I recall a question from Billy Joel, “When will you realize Vienna waits for you”. * Well, our very own rock fashion icon, Rod Stewart, would tell us, “Tonight’s the Night”, and he’d be right. The wait is over Vienna, time to try out this Old Town on tap.

A light clear amber pour, a tinge of red in the mix, headless. Mild toffee nose. The taste is a light watery caramel malt smoothie, no hops or bite. There is a touch of nuttiness and a bit of bitter on the finish. Very light, but with a nice flavour. As it warmed to me the bitters started to show up but it was the light watery mouthfeel that stood out.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1977 song “Vienna” by Billy Joel is from his album “The Stranger”. Joel said it was one of his two favourite songs along with “Summer, Highland Falls”. Rod Stewart’s 1976 song “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright)” wasn’t about deciding on which beer to drink but was him trying to convince his girlfriend to lose her virginity to him. The French spoken part in the song is by his girlfriend at the time, Britt Ekland.
