English Cream Ale

Banter & Co. Brewing

5% Alcohol

Just to be clear, you don’t have to steer clear of this beer if you’re lactose intolerant. No dairy products were used in the making of this or any other cream ale.* However, many ingredients that those of the bovine persuasion enjoy in their daily diet were. Barley, corn and wheat along with the ever present hops and yeast are all listed. According to Banter, they have made this traditional American style of ale with hops and barley malt from the United Kingdom, hence the “English” moniker.

This brew pours golden ever clear with minimal head, no cream on top of this milk bottle brew. A very mild almost non-existent malt aroma, maybe it’s in my nose, maybe it’s in my head? It’s a smooth creamy cream ale with a lager sweet malt countenance, some British bitters followed by a honey sweet aftertaste.

More like a honey lager than a cream ale, the sweet is kinda endearing. After a couple of quaffs the sweet settled down into a nice balanced ale all parts equally mild. Definitely creamy and decidedly big swiggable. In fact I preferred it that way! They call it sessionable and they ain’t lyin’. This cream of the crop rises to the top.

*Editor’s Comment: Cream Ales were a pre-prohibition creation first brewed in America. Combining ale yeast with cold lager fermentation, the hybrid style is so name because of its typically smooth mouthfeel.
