I have reviewed 13 premium beers to date on this website and let me assure you, the word “premium” guarantees nothing other than an extra adjective on the can. The title premium almost seems like a participation award these days.
1987 marked the premier of “The Simpsons”, the Stock Market crashed in October, The Bangles had us all “Walking Like an Egyptian” and Michael Douglas and Glenn Close dealt with some relationship issues in “Fatal Attraction”. And of course, that is the year Great Lakes started their brewery. They tell us that this brew is a throwback to their humble beginnings, so it seems only fitting that I am going to throw one back tonight. The coat of arms dates back to their original lager and according to GL they aren’t quite sure what the crest stands for but they are good with it.
This brew pours golden clear with a sliver of foam. A nice mild malt aroma. Drinks nice and smooth with good middlin’ malt flavour, very nice. No bite, zing, hops or aftertaste, just a nice smooth flavourful lager with just a hint of sweet on the finish. Back to basics and I must admit, after all these fancy pants brews this is a welcome change. It seems like a long time since I have had a straight up easy drinking nice and tasty lager. The Blue Jays beat the Yankees, the Cowboys beat the Giants and I had a GL Premium Lager to cheer them both on with. Seems like there was some star alignment going on.
The term premium has been used pretty liberally when it comes to beers these days but in this case it’s well deserved.
