What the hell is a Horchata? * I’ve been around, travelled a bit, know some things, things I wish I’d known sooner, and others I wish I never knew. But I’ve never crossed paths with a Horchata before. So, I Googled it. Get this, it’s a beverage originating from Spain and made with tiger nuts! ** Are we talking catstration here? Gross. I didn’t even know they had tigers in Spain, maybe where the rain stays mainly on the plain? I bet Tony the Tiger isn’t saying “it’s great” after quaffing a Horchata, but if he is it’s a couple octaves higher than usual. But when it comes to a vigil in Virgil, I’ll place my faith in the church of Silversmith. Here’s hoping there’s no black or orange fur in my porter.
A dark fade to black pour with a trim slim tan head. A sweet dark lager aroma, vanilla and cocoa? First quaff is a sweet cocoa malt roast with vanilla and with some espresso bitters on the finish. As it evolves the sweet vanilla stays with a creamy mild malt and some faded very mild coffee bitters. Not a tiger by the tail at all, this tiger is tame. The word mellow comes to mind, as both the beer and I do just that. What started out as almost too sweet but not quite, ended up as a tasty dessert porter.
They call this beer sweet and rich, two things this beer definitely is and the COM definitely aren’t. Not a fridge stocker but a unique vanilla porter that’s worth a quaff.
