The Little Apple

Way back in the day, driving South from a 4 month tour of duty at the mines, I headed into Toronto to catch up with my old buddy Smitty. I can still remember the bar had a complex bamboo fan arrangement on the ceiling all connected by chains and sprockets. We sat down and ordered a beer and when it came to the table Frank was on the sound system singing New York New York “These little-town blues, Are melting away”* and they were.   It may not be the big apple, but the little apple is plenty enough apple for me.

I’m a Toronto fan, the Leafs, the Jays, the Raptors. I am also partial to a beer or two on occasion. So when I saw this Indie Alehouse Toronto IPA I said to myself that I gotta get some of that in me.

An Orangeville orange pour with a Richmond rich Hill of a head on top. A juicy zingy aroma, smells nothing like Toronto. The taste is a great tropical juicer, with hoppy zing and grapefruit bitters, a balanced brew for sure. It’s evolving into almost a double IPA with a bit of a funky juicy body, bitters taking a sabbatical. Settling into a classic juicy IPA. Very tasty. Indie Alehouse is another Toronto team I was cheering for last night.

*Editor’s Comment: The song “Theme from New York, New York” was written for the 1977 Martin Scorcsese movie “New York, New York” by songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb. It was originally sung by Liza Minelli. Frank Sinatra began performing it in 1978 and it quickly became his signature song. A number of New York sports teams have used the song including the New York Yankees who would play Sinatra’s version at the start of the game and after a win and Minelli’s version after a loss, until Minelli complained, and now Sinatra’s version is played regardless of the game’s outcome.
