Guinness, the iconic Irish beer, brewed in …..Baltimore? Baltimore? The famous US beer brewing city of Baltimore (note the sarcasm). What the hell is Baltimore doing brewing a Guinness. Baltimore is known for …..I don’t even know what Baltimore is known for, but I know it isn’t known for brewing beer.
And the can has the Guinness Toucan, the familiar national bird of Ireland (more sarcasm) with a miner’s cap on in a coal mine, a pick axe on one wing and a Guinness Blonde on the other wing, promoting drinking at work and saying ”Mine’s a Blonde.” In 1982 the Toucan was dropped from Guinness ads so this must be a retro look, or I got a very old beer from the shelf.
I am a big Guinness fan but this one didn’t work for me. Mixing Irish yeast and American hops and who knows what else to get what they call a “citrusy refreshing finish” just left me with a lager that is too crisp and contrived. It is like they are trying too hard to be an American beer. It made me think they were selling out to try to cash in on the big beer the American market.
Crisp and golden, yes. Too crisp, yes. It was uncomfortable like a too starched shirt that creates a rash or a too long high note that become a shriek. Their Irish Lager (HopHouse 13) is a much better lager.
