My old buddy DT (his initials not his condition) got his BMW out (his motorcycle not his preppy mid life crisis) and sent a note saying it was spring and time for some IPAs. Of course we all know that any time is a good time for a good IPA and a good IPA is always good for a good time. So I thought I would make this good time work double time with Sawdust City’s classic West Coast-Style Double IPA Twin Pines. This high-octane double pine bough slap in the kisser was our feature adult beverage with the Crownsmen crew on our thirsty Thursday get together.

I did tell the team to brace for impact, because at 8.8 and 88 this one will put a quiver in your liver, it’s not for the faint of heart or any other organ for that matter. Unfortunately, Rory didn’t partake, he was under the weather. His buddy Lenny must have been sick too, he looked like crap. But Jerrod was up to the challenge, chomping at the bit and raring to go, an eager beaver, the first horse out of the gate, and an assortment of other cliches that are all somehow inadequate to describe his 11:30 am PST thirst for this dangerous double.

A storybook pour.

A deep golden clear pour with a healthy hoppy heapin’ head. A storybook pour if the storybook is “B is for Beer”. * Very juicy on the nose, stone fruit with hops present and accounted for. A juicy citrus stone fruit first quaff with a hoppy body and those oh so pine bitters finishing off the classic sequence. Certainly no shortage of bitters but the big fruit flavour with the hefty hops and the bushelful of bitters make for a balanced and not boozy double. For Jerrod it was love at first twin pine bough slap to the face, and by the second one he was hooked and looking for a second double.

Not for rookies or tenderfoots but if you’re an IPA lover, this twin to win is one double that you will want to have more than one of.

*Editor’s Comment: The 2009 novella “B is for Beer” by Tom Robbins (one of DT's fav authors) is described as both “A children’s book for grownups” and “a grownup book for children”. It is the story of Gracie Perke, a young girl exploring the world of beer. She learns why every adult enjoys it and why she is not allowed to drink it. The book was adapted into an animated musical “B is for Beer: The Musical” with such notable voice performers as Belinda Carlisle, Jon Cryer and Rose Byrne.
