Rorschach Test. 5 out of 6 COM said “beer bottle”. Fonger said “bong”.
Here’s the thing. I have had an ongoing struggle with vanilla in beers, and most of the time I wish they would just extract it. When it comes to brewing with the fickle beans, subtle is the approach that wins the day. Enter Rorschach’s Decadence series. The word decadence has two meanings that in a certain context can be viewed as a cause and effect combination. It can mean luxurious self-indulgence or it can mean moral or cultural decline. I’m certain Rorschach is going for the former, but either way, subtle doesn’t enter the equation.
Rorschach does have some eclectic brews, but truth be told, we did enjoy their Truth Serum. Time to sample this oh so decadent chocolate milk stout. An ink blot black pour that encourages psychoanalysis, resulting in a shrunken head. Sweet milky malt vanilla coconut aroma, it actually smells creamy.
Sweet vanilla extract rules the roost, with some coconut and chocolate in the background and a roasted malt espresso bitter chaser. Basically, vanilla overload and bitter coffee boozy backbite, a non-endearing blend in my books. I didn’t even attempt a big swig test with this one, small swigs were overwhelming on their own. It had a few moments where it was just sweet, but mostly it was sickly sweet.
You could call this beer decadent and in this case both definitions would apply.
