We started our cross country coast to coast toast to Canada at Port Rexton on the East Coast island of Newfoundland. Our tour concludes about as far West as we can get, on Vancouver Island at British Columbia’s capital, Victoria. 4979 kilometers for one very tired crow, or 7176 kilometers for a one week one way highway and ferry island hopping road trip. When it comes to great beer, Canada has it from coast to coast and all pints (not a typo) in between.
My first first day on my new job in North Central BC (Houston, near Smithers) I remember being introduced to my supervisor:
Supervisor: “Where you from kid.”
Me: “Ontario.”
Supervisor : “The only good thing to come out of the East is the sun.”

You don’t want to get slashed by this sucker.
Since that time I have had much warmer welcomes during my visits to the beautiful West coast of Canada. And here we are as far West as can be, on Vancouver Island. Home of the largest totem pole in the world (no surprise there) and home to the largest hockey stick in the world (??). * The birthplace and current home of Pamela Anderson too. ** The island is frequented by seniors and orcas alike although they typically don’t hang in the same circles, or pods as the case may be. Since the Muskokas are buried under umpteen feet of snow at present we decided to visit the mildest climes in Canada for some island time.
How about a Vancouver Island Brewing’s brewski from the pacified coast. And like the old duck said, an Islander Lager fits the bill. Time to see if it hits the spot too. A golden bright pour with head of foam surfacing sighting. A bit bubbly, with a malt fresh aroma. A middlin’ malt flavour with a touch of fizz, no lager sweet to start, but a hint of fruit in there. Fizz and fruit fade and the malt remains for some nice basic easy drinking down to earth silky smooth and satisfying suds of the lager persuasion.***
