Back in the day I was quaffing quarts at the Ports. These days I’m a one and done pint partaker in the Port. As in Port Dalhousie. A lunchtime retreat to Lock Street to check out a new brew to review. In complete defiance or maybe just indifference to the calendar or any other chronological conventions I decide to have a Maibock in April!
The brewer has dedicated Owl the Love “In loving memory of Nan”. It seems that the spiritual meaning of seeing an owl at night could be a loved one that has passed is reminding you that they love you and will always be with you. Perhaps the origin of the name of this brew? Perhaps.
I think it was an ancient poet who scribed the immortal words “A pint, a pretzel, and me.” ** Sounds like as good a plan as anyone is coming up with these days.
A radiant bronze pour with a light tan head that can rotate 360 degrees just like an owl!*** Coincidence? Maybe. Definitely a toffee aroma. It has a thin mouthfeel with a taste of caramel with an ale bitter crisp and bitter finish. Not a smooth operator but flavourful and easy drinking. This owl has a bit of a bitters bite to it, keep your fingers out of the cage. The higher ABV doesn’t jump out at you. Great sequence and balance.
A departure from the typical amber, but not so much so that I couldn’t enjoy it. This was a very nice hot pretzel Port pint accompaniment. When it comes to Owl the Love, what’s not to love?
