Not that funny.
Ok, here’s the thing, I don’t find Popeye funny. In the comics since the 1920’s and I just don’t get it. Love triangle with Bluto and Olive Oyl, and I think Olive could do better than both of them to be honest. “I yam what I yam”, what’s so funny about that? And what about this Swee’ Pea? Popeye’s nephew or Olive Oyl’s son? That’s either improper, incorrect or incestuous and could be all three, but not a real knee slapper. Let’s put it this way Robin Williams, who according to Norm Macdonald was “the funniest man in the world” killed as Aladdin’s genie but even he couldn’t make Popeye funny.*
Anyway, this brew’s play on words leverages images of a comic strip that came out of the great depression, so I guess it could have been seen as funny back then. But if all my stocks crashed tomorrow, I don’t see Popeye cheering me up. Let’s see if this Rouge River hazy can put a smile on my face.
Powered with hops instead of spinach, this brew pours crazy hazy peach. Grapefruit on the snoot. A citrus juicy and hoppy aroma. First taste is just like it smells, with a watery mouthfeel. Citrus grapefruit with grapefruit bitters, it’s A-OK. As progress was made towards the bottom of the glass the bitters remained but it got juicier, almost a puree sweet. Next evolution was the bitters not as bitter.
Another RR hazy, this one was a decent enough IPA, just not that funny, maybe it needed some spinach to make it super?
