Summertime seems perfect to try a Golden Ale. So last time at the cottage, I cracked into this Golden Ale from Trestle Brewing company. The art work on the can screams summer, with boats, docks, islands and the bright yellow colour and pouring it into my frosted glass increased my anticipation. The beer looks great with a vibrant gold colour and a decent head. Although my wife says otherwise, I don’t think I was actually drooling – it is perfectly natural to sweat in the summer. Mine just happened to collect at the corner of my mouth.
All the elements were there for a delicious taste sensation. But the drink did not deliver. There was nothing wrong with this beer, but there was a tangy aftertaste that I didn’t really enjoy. I’m not talking about the usual hoppy bitterness that I do enjoy, but this was almost a metallic taste.
To be fair, I am not much of a Blonde fan. So it could be that this “Golden Ale” is actually much closer in flavour profile to a Blonde. In which case, it might just be an outstanding sample of a beer type that just doesn’t do anything for me. Back when I was a young man, we would call a Blonde a Blonde.
Not sure if it is the hops or my high expectations that lead to my disappointment in this brew, but whichever the case, I wasn’t rushing to find another in my fridge.
