Combine the bitter love child of a lemon and an orange with the most eclectic brewer out there and what do you get? Godpeed’s Yuzu Citrus Saison, that’s what. Yuzu, yeast and a clove or two and voila, a beer for all saisons, a befuddled and baffling brewski for sure.
Listen, I think saisons are an acquired taste to start with and just like Clint, Eli and Lee, I’ve experienced the good, the bad and the ugly.* Let’s see where this one falls on the suds scale.
It pours very clear and a peachy golden. Aroma of a fizzy lemon sour! Concerning, maybe alarming, but not yet disarming. A lemony citrus fizzy first swig reveals a not tart but close citrus lemon funk, the spices both odd and at odds with the Yuzu. The finish went from slightly dry and tart to an unpleasant citrus clove bitter mix.
The citrus mix to a blunt dry spiced finish is not a good sequence in my book or my review. You won’t hear me say this too often but I’m actually happy this one is a stubby.
