Toña Especial For Sure

Toña

The COMDB translation department worked overtime on this one. I figured they would be use to four letter words by now so it should be simple enough to translate the word Toña. However nothing is really ever simple when it comes to our translation department. They asked me whether I wanted “..the general translation, the slang or the colloquial?”  My first thought was I was impressed that they knew what the word “colloquial” meant*, my second thought was they probably didn’t and were just trying to impress me. Regardless of how many thoughts I had at the time I thought it best to cover all the bases so I said” all of them”, which was followed by a groan, which I assumed meant OK in some lost language which wasn’t lost on me.

They told me that Toña could mean a cat game, it could be a big loaf of bread or a honey cake. As a colloquialism it can refer to a kick or a punch, the slang version a bash. They went on to say “However perhaps a more applicable colloquialism is “pillarse una toña” which means to get drunk, or plastered or get pissed or get ……”. I said OK I get the picture. I doubt that a beer company would call their beer a name that meant “Get Sloshed” but you never know.

Compañia Cervecera de Nicaragua tell us that this is “a lager-type beer that represents Nicaraguan traditions and customs.” I understand that many Nicaraguan traditions or customs are associated with religious holidays so I am not sure which ones of those involve a lager especial but I am willing to give one a try.  This one pours light golden see-through clear as the proverbial bell. A very clear pour. A bit of fizz provides a bright white head. It has a fresh mild malt bread aroma, very much a traditional lager on the nose. Did I mention how clear this beer was? Tastes of light malt with a subtle sweet finish. Delicious, and clear. A nice easy drinking lager, no bitters, nice fresh aftertaste. Very good.

Clearly a great lager.

*Editor’s Comment: I have a sneaking suspicion that our reviewer doesn’t know what colloquial means either. Colloquial refers to ordinary or familiar conversational language as opposed to formal or literary.

*Reviewer’s Comment: I am pretty sure you had to look that up.
