West Coasting Again

West Coast

Elora Brewing Co.

6.5% Alcohol

Gorge-ous

Those river rafter crafters from Elora have hopped up their wagon train and headed West to do some coast toasting to the original craft IPAs.* For those of you picturing scantily clad sunbathers and surfer dudes and dudettes catching waves and eyes, with a Beach Boys medley in the background, just remember that northern cali is a rough piece of craggy coast not fit for fest or frolic. The question remains, will this be a Baywatch bask in the sun brewski or  lost highway drive by sub par suds?**  An imbibing seems imminent.

As for Elora itself, no coasts West or East in their general vicinity but there is a Grand River running through it. Literally. A picturesque site, the Elora Gorge, has 22m high cliff walls and trails around and down to the river below. As for the brewer, we did do some Maxin’ Relaxin’ with their session IPA,  and JT found the fountain of youth in his Elora Borealis.

This West coast toast pours very clear with a touch of surf on the surface. It has a crisp clean juicy aroma no hops on the nose. It tastes pure unadulterated juicy, a touch of funk and a smidgen of bitters with an almost puree juicy aftertaste.  The super citrus fruit salad juicy is not quite over the top and is followed by some middlin’ pine bitters to make a slightly unbalanced but quite tasty combo.

Initially I was worried about too much juice on the loose but it settled into a nice juicy low hops pine bitters easy drinking refreshing IPA.

*Editor’s Comment: Although IPAs have been around for centuries, Anchor Brewing and Sierra Nevada, out of Southern California, are credited with starting the craft brewing movement in the 70’s with their own take on the IPA by hopping it up. At around that time Green Flash Brewing out of San Diego actually brewed a beer called West Coast IPA and trademarked the name.

**Editor’s Comment: The original popular TV series Baywatch was filmed on Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, on the Southern coast of California. The lost highway which traverses the lost coast of California is in the Northern part of the state and is mainly natural and undeveloped coastline due to its rugged nature and topography.
