Hoppy trails.

Now it’s time for a brew rhyme, How about an Uxbridge ale by the Oak Ridge trail,

Or test out your bike’s shocks, riding Three RocksIt’s an Elgin Blonde by the Elgin pond,

A chill beer, summer’s here. If you get the chance tour Leaksdale Manse, with a nod to Lucy Maud,

Let’s salute Colonel Sam, You know I am.

And the last stop on our tour, is the local brewer. *

I find being by the water provides me an opportunity for self-reflection. But this Second Wedge tribute to local landmark Elgin Pond didn’t have me navel gazing, only looking forward to another TSW super suds special.

A golden ale, bright and semi-clear with a light white head. A picture perfect pondside pour. Full malt aroma. The first taste is a full almost creamy mouthfeel. It’s bready malt to lager sweet with a very subtle crisp finish and a dry aftertaste. The pilsner malt is making its presence known. As it evolves the malt stays, as the sweet mellows, with a dry finish in play. Nice sequence and well balanced.

No offense to Colonel Sam Sharpe or Lucy Maud Montgomery or Governor General Elgin, or Uxbridge’s great trail mix, but my favourite stop on our rhyming tour was the local brewer.

*Editor’s Comment: Uxbridge calls itself the trail capital of Canada with over 300 kilometers of public trails, including Oak Ridges and Three Rocks. Elgin Pond was created in 1828 to run a sawmill and is central to Uxbridge. Originally named Park Pond, it was renamed after Lord Elgin, Canada’s Governor General from 1846 to 1854. Leaksdale Manse is a National Historic Site and the former residence of Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. Colonel Sam Sharpe was an elected MP who raised a battalion from the Uxbridge area and led them to Europe in World War I where they saw action at Vimy and Passchendaele as well as other battles. He was re-elected to office in 1917, the only member of parliament ever elected from the battlefield. Of course, the local brewer is none other than The Second Wedge Brewing Co.
