Last time I was in St. John’s I walked the Rock for 30 minutes to Bannerman’s on a cold rainy night, passing a number of lively pubs on the way, only to realize that I had missed last call. Talk about cranky. But just like a wasted away Jimmy in Margaritaville,* I know it was my own damn fault. Live and learn. So this time it’s a late afternoon cab ride to Bannerman’s for some daytime drinking and I belly up to the bar for a site visit sampler. The oh so helpful staff make a few recommendations and next thing I know a Broad Strokes Kolsch, sans umlaut, has my full attention.

von Bismarck is making a point
A light golden cloudy serenity now kinda pour with an experienced bar keep head and voila, perfect pour. This classic German wheat pilsner mix has a fresh aroma, some floral or fruit but both very mild. First thing that stands out is the creamy mouthfeel. A nice middlin’ malt body with a peppery spice, interesting, unexpected, some would say surprising. As it evolves the pepper departs for a pilsner style crisp finish. I wouldn’t describe it as crushable, but it is certainly amenable to big swigs.
Great basic pub ale, a mellow quaff for a mellow fellow. Not exactly a traditional German, this is not Otto’s Kolsch but it sure hit the Bis- mark.**
