A Big Apple Brew from a Little Apple Brewer

Original New York A.P.A.

Amber Brewery

4.6% Alcohol

In the woods, drinking a Big Apple brew from a Little Apple brewer. Toronto* based Amber Brewery has whipped up an American style New York not so pale ale for us. Suds on the Hudson.

Way back in the day (when the Canadian dollar was par with the US dollar) we enjoyed a few happy hours in Alex Bay, NY. But the New York that Amber is talking about is New York, New York. And it appears that Frank was correct when he said “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.” ** Even in Markham, Ontario.*

A great looking pour, with a robust two finger foamy topper. An amber pale from Amber, or an Amber Pale that’s amber. Take your pick, both are correct.  A malty metallic hoppy aroma, interesting. The taste is malt caramel with some mild fruit to boot, and a flat finish. A light watery mouthfeel that doesn’t match its full flavour. The finish goes from flat to dry, a mild dry, not quite a crisp. It reminded me of a Cali Common with that Coca Cola caramel.  Nice subtle fruit and hops make it a pale.

An old school American style pale, that has  “these little town blues melting away“. ** How do you like them apples!

*Editor’s Comment: Markham is its own city located East of Toronto but is recognized as part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

**Editor’s Comment: Lyrics from the song “Theme from New York, New York” that was written for the 1977 Martin Scorsese movie “New York, New York” by songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb. It was originally sung by Liza Minelli. Frank Sinatra began performing it in 1978 and it quickly became his signature song.
