I’m a big Flying Monkeys fan, not the creepy furry flying fury of the West Witch minions variety, but the ever creative, curious and crafty Canadian craft brewers. In my opinion Juicy Ass is the classic modern day IPA, so nice the COM did it twice. So the FM IPA box set contains a variety of quizzical quaffs. Their hop and hyphen heavy Meep-Morp was a super suds super star. Yummo, not so much.
FM ask us if “bitter old IPAs are getting you down?” Nope. They ask us “do you delight in a hoppy punch of citrus freshness?” Apparently not, if this is it. A 5 A-live IPA, they tell us* with orange, pineapple, apricot, papaya, and a mystery fruit as yet not formally introduced. I suspect it’s a lemon, just like this beer is. By now you may see where this review is headed.
A clearer IPA you will not see, but you will see through it. It does have a nice bright white head, a sharp looking pour. OJ on the nose with some happy hoppy hops in the background, way back. The taste is thin watery OJ fizz with malt and a fizzy finish, not hoppy at all but some bitters in the after taste. The pulp free watery OJ puree overpowers the other fruits and seems to be at odds with the malt backbone. Some hops may have saved this one, but alas, no hops in the glass, which just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
More Yucko than Yummo. If I were you (or me, which I am), I would take a pass on Yummo and grab a Juicy Ass instead.
