A Glass of Dutch Courage *

Hollandia Premium Lager

Royal Swinkels Family Brewers

5% Alcohol

Way back in the day, pre-progenies, me and the Missus visited Amster-damn, I swear. You may be thinking of Holland, but you are actually thinking of The Netherlands. Known for their windmills and tulips, wooden shoes, the Cafes that didn’t serve coffee, and red-light districts. But the Department of Procurement was most interested in their diamond cutting. ** Being of a frugal nature, I declined to purchase a diamond on the trip and found myself in Dutch with the wife. *

In my hand, and soon to be in my glass, is the pride of Netherlands, 500ml of 5% Hollandia Premium. Definitely a Dutch bargain.*

A golden pour with a bright white head that was quickly a memory. Malt bread on the nose, a touch of floral as well. A substantial creamy mouthfeel, the taste is malt creamy and lager sweet. Eventually some graininess entered the picture. It is a smooth basic lager, a bit creamier than your standard fare. And ironically, that’s what helps Hollandia beat the Dutch.*

*Editor’s Comment: “Dutch courage” is the courage provided by alcohol. To “be in Dutch” is to be in trouble. The expression “beat the Dutch” is to exceed expectations. A “Dutch bargain” is a deal made over drinks.

**Editor’s Comment: The Netherlands is the largest of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of Netherlands. Informally known as Holland, North and South Holland are just two provinces within the country. Amsterdam has a long history of diamond cutting and processing going back to the 16th century, and for that reason is known as the “City of Diamonds”.
