A Honey of a Lager

Bear Paw

This thirsty Thursday with the Crownsmen was not without its challenges. When Gaudy said “Jerrod sounds annoying” I thought she was just stating the obvious, but she was referring to a technical problem with the sound system and some background noise. It turned out to be a Windows issue, and closing a few of them rectified the problem.

Rory and Jerrod talked about their Michelin 5 star dining experiences. I don’t recall ever eating at a Michelin restaurant but I do remember having a beer at a diner that sold Goodyear tires.

The top 5 list was a deal junkie’s dream, billon dollar acquisitions all. Here is the COMDB golden rule of acquisitions.

Q: How to do create a $5 Million company?

A: Buy a $10 million dollar company.

Rory presented the market winner of the day, a stock you simply must buy that will increase your net worth substantially, put you on easy street and make you the envy of all the other hobby investors. Unfortunately, I can’t recall the name of that stock, but be assured if you buy it, you will do very well.

Our brew to review was Whistler’s Bear Paw, a Honey Lager made from 100% BC honey.* This isn’t our first visit to the honey pot. We’ve had honey blondes, honey browns, honey creams and Amber honeys (yes, we have). We’ve had Haliburton’s and Hilary’s and Monty’s and Earl’s honey. We’ve even had Blood & Honey, a pistol packin’ pint from Revolver Brewing in Texas!

Medic Alert: Bee careful with this one, if you’re allergic to honey you may break out in hives. I know, that’s a bit of a rash statement.**

This brew is an amber honey brown going down. No head on this hive. The taste is a malt sweet lager, very smooth. A touch of honey, enough to taste, and just enough to make for a pillowy mouthfeel. It does get a bit sweeter as the quaffing progresses but never crosses the Brewer & Shipley line.*** A nice, sweet lager, easy drinking and tasty. Rory couldn’t find the words to express how he felt about it, which is somewhat concerning in his line of work. Jerrod said “I sure could use another one” which seemed to me to be a favourable and not at all annoying comment.  I added my approval for six thumbs up.

No hives experienced, just one honey of a lager.

*Editor’s Comment: BC has the largest number of beekeepers by province with 5,225 reported in 2024 and 34% of the Nation’s apiarists. However Alberta ranks number 1 by far in terms of honey production with 33,331,000 pounds produced in 2024 representing 43% of Canada’s honey production. China is the world’s number 1 honey producer, Canada is number 11 on the global list just behind the USA.

**Editor’s Comment: Honey allergies can be quite serious including anaphylaxis and are usually triggered by pollens or bee products including honey. A bee sting may also trigger a reaction. Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, a mild reaction may include hives. Perhaps another reaction, which our reviewer seems to be experiencing, is that you may break out in bad puns.

***Editor’s Comment: Brewer & Shipley were a one hit wonder band with their 1971 song “One Toke Over the Line”. The song did create some controversy and spurred a US Government response encouraging radio stations to ban it from airplay.  That type of censorship most likely helped sales.
