Hilary Goes to the Moon

Sawdust City Brewing

Touring the Muskokas with Farmer Steve and his progenies, we had to check out the Largest Beer Spa in the World. Much to our surprise, early October and the place was as busy as an Apple Store on Black Friday. What’s no surprise is that our Muskoka tour ended up at Sawdust City for lunch, one of our favourite breweries and it’s time for a trip to the moon.

Yea Hilary, you go girl!

We perused their fulsome draft menu, including a few new brews. We had recently got a glow on with Fire Glow, so the other newbie on the menu, Hilary Goes to the Moon was up to bat. My first thought was the Honeymooners’  Ralph Cramden, fist and teeth clenched, expressing his displeasure with his sarcastic wife by saying “To the moon, Alice, to the moon.” If you think that’s politically incorrect you should check out some reruns of “All in the Family”. * Then I thought perhaps that the beer name was one recourse the Democrats were thinking about after losing the 2016 election.** Of course, my favourite multiple choice answer, none of the above, applies here.

The backstory behind this brew’s name is far more touching. It is a tribute to a young lady whose “positivity knew no bounds” and “left us far too soon” and obviously was a lasting influence on the Sawdust City team.

A clear light golden pour with a moondust head for me to explore. A hoppy fruity aroma, more of an IPA on the nose. The taste is a complex pilsner, a light malt and hoppy body, with a crisp fruit hoppy finish. A slightly bitter aftertaste. A unique sequence that works well, mainly because it is so well balanced.  It reminded me more of an American Pale Ale then a pilsner, but whatever it is, it seems to me that Sawdust City, like Hilary, has a sense of curiosity and creativity that knows no bounds.

*Editor’s Comment: “The Honeymooners” was a sitcom that ran from 1955 to 1956. Jackie Gleason produced, created and starred in the show and composed the theme music as well. “All in the Family” was a TV show that ran from 1971 to 1979 and dealt with many complex social issues through the eyes of the main (and bigoted) character Archie Bunker, played by Carrol O’Connor.

**Editor’s Comment: In 2016 Donald Trump, a Republican, beat Hilary Clinton, the Democrat candidate, to win the office of President of the United States of America. As if you didn’t know that.
