It’s not so sober October and the dark brews have hit the shelves. Dark days are here again! After sampling (and enjoying) a Newfoundland German Light Lager, how about a Muskoka Czech Dark Lager. Both lagers, but as different as day and night. It’s one of my favourite types of beer from one of my favourite brewers, Sawdust City. I find myself wistfully reminiscing about another SC Czech dark, Kraslice, which would be in the COMDB hall of fame if such a thing existed.
The name of this brew, Fire Glow, reminded me of the Bob Seger song “The Fire Down Below”. * When I first heard the song I thought he was singing about a condition resulting from too many groupie encounters. After listening to the song lyrics a few times my suspicions were confirmed.
This fire is a deep dark pour for sure, with a red glow coming through from the faux fire below. A respectable and respectful slightly off-white head. The aroma is definitely roasted malt cocoa, it smells smooth. The taste is a cocoa porter smooth treat with a mild dark chocolate bitter finish and aftertaste. The word delicious comes to mind. Bit of fizz, bit of bite, and a lot of loco cocoa tastiness.
A smooth roast malt and cocoa body with slight dark chocolate bitters in the finish and aftertaste. And who doesn’t love chocolate.** Another great SC brew, Czech please.
