What happens when it’s 5 o’clock somewhere and that somewhere just happens to be here? Well, if you’re a COM it’s time for a beer. Not at all coincidentally, about that time I had entered the premises of one Bridgewater Brewing, where the server’s question “will you be having something to drink” is always rhetorical.
A seat by the open-air patio on a sunny day, a “hearty” honkin’ big pretzel on my plate and a frosty tall tap of Black Top in my glass, and like a flash it became crystal clear to me why the temperance movement was never successful.
Not my first Bridgewater brewski. Their Rose City rose to the occasion, and their Baa-Rista Stout garnered the ever elusive super suds rating of 18!* With a series of successful super suds, hopes were as high as a Snoop Dogg concert goer for this Bridgewater Top tap. It did not disappoint.
A pour that looked black at the bar but held up to the sun was a dark dark brown. Roasted malt and cocoa aroma. Can something smell smooth? If something can than this did. A nice creamy mouthfeel with roasted malt and cocoa with a bit of fizz to start things off. The fizz abates but never vacates, and leads to a matte flat, almost dry finish. Great cocoa roast malt flavour in balance and never over the top, with a nice smooth light body and mild dry finish.
Delicious and nutritious. Creamy yet light. Dark but not at all foreboding. Full flavoured but easy drinking. In a world full of contradictions, it’s no wonder that we drink, but a beer this good is the only reason I need.
Great service, an oh so doughy good pretzel, and a very tasty, accessible full flavoured dark lager, well done BB.
*Editor’s Comment: He’s not an easy 18.
