A Throwback to Throw Back

Silver Creek Lager

Sleeman Brewing & Malting Co.

5% Alcohol

This brew is a throwback. Way back to 1851 when John Sleeman started the Silver Creek Brewing Company, and the rest is history. * Well actually, that part is history too. As far as history goes, which is way back and then some, much if not all of the past is history, some of it not that remarkable mind you, although it is getting remarked on right now.

They say that “those who cannot remember history are bound to repeat it.”** That saying is very true, because most of high-school history class is memorization, and if you fail history class you have to repeat it the next year, and don’t you forget it. But for us COM history class is all in the past now.

The 5th COMDB AGM is recent history, and this brew was a cooler stocker for that event, nice on ice, a weapon of mass consumption so to speak, a post links thirst quencher and palette cleanser, but not a contestant on the brew docket. Taste test time.

This silver is golden and clear, no head to impede the view. A nice middlin’ malt aroma. The taste is malt body, lager sweet with mild bitters and a dry pils like aftertaste. A good solid lager with a nice flavour sequence and balance. Sleeman tell us this lager is their “take on a traditional pilsner”. We all know that all pilsners are lagers but not all lagers are pilsners, enter Silver Creek Lager pilsner.  Are we all clear on that now? Balanced with a dry but not acerbic finish, the secret to a successful pils in my opinion.

History in a can, a Sleeman’s throwback to throw back. And what we end up with is a nice solid lager pils that lends itself to having more than one. A very drinkable and thirst quenching back to basics brew.

*Editor’s Comment: At the age of 18, George Sleeman started working at his father’s brewery and by 1867 became the sole owner of Sleeman Brewing & Malting. Guelph University has a Sleeman Collection in their digital library which provides an excellent history of the family and the local brewery.

**Editor’s Comment: The correct quotation is “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” It comes from George Santayana’s 1905 writings “The Life of Reason”.
