Bud Picks a Good One

The dead of night* sounds like just about when Santa delivers my beer of the month club Christmas gift. Maybe that’s why Bud, the Elf on the beer shelf, recommended this brew for Christmas Eve. For a cranky old man there is nothing quite as Christmassy as watching the Grinch while quaffing a sturdy stout. Enter Gateway City’s “In the Dead of Night” oatmeal stout with a sneaky old racoon making off with the barley, as those overgrown rodents are prone to do. The varmints also have a soft spot for sunflower seeds, but that is another story.

Not coincidentally, this brew pours dark as the dead of night, thick and slow with a classic tan tam atop. A mild stout aroma, roasted malts coffee and chocolate all suggested but not well defined. Although it has a thick pour it has a watery dark lager mouthfeel. A great stout flavour with a bit of fizz on first sip but gone by the second bit. What does start to appear is a subtle sweet finish driven from the oats. A classic oatmeal stout, very tasty.  Bud picked a good one

*Editor’s Comment: The “dead of night” refers to that time of night that is very dark, where everyone is sleeping and things are still and quiet. It can also be used to denote the middle of something such as in the dead of winter. It seems to have first appeared in the 16th century and was already in use when Shakespeare wrote the phrase into “Twelfth Night”.
