An Ultra Light that Doesn’t Fly

Captain Ultra of course.

Hob knobbing at a fancy private function, that’s just how we roll at COMDB. An open bar but limited selection, not that I’m complaining. I had a choice, suck on a Heinie or quaff an Ultra.*  I have had a few heinies in my day (that didn’t sound good) but had never sampled an Ultra, so I said to myself “why not give it the old college try”. I replied to myself “That’s the spirit”. Better to drink a light than to curse the darkness.**

A pour as pale as one of the Winter brothers, or both of them for that matter.***  Minimal carbs, calories, alcohol, head, aroma, and colour. And although some may claim that I have no taste, this beer definitely has none. Not bad, not good, not offensive, not much of anything really. Some very mild malt in the scant bubbles. I expected Michael Bublé to show up with a six pack of this mildly beer flavoured sparkling water, Brew Bubbly (that’s Bublé).

If you were parched on a very hot day after crawling across the desert on your hands and knees, this light easy drinking lager would be quaffed in record time and hit the spot. But if you are looking for flavour in the desert this would be a mirage.

Light as a cloud, but it ain’t cloud 9.

*Editor’s Comment: Marvel superhero Captain Ultra was one of the least powerful superheroes ever created. While Superman was vulnerable to kryptonite, Captain Ultra suffered from severe pyrophobia (fear of fire). He was no match for…. a match. He didn’t last long in the comics, I think Marvel fired him. Don’t offer him a light, unless it’s an Ultra Light.

**Editor’s Comment: The ancient Chinese proverb is "It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness", meaning it is better to do something, anything, than to do nothing and complain about it.

***Editor’s Comment: Musicians Johnny Winter and his younger brother Edgar are both albino.
