I thought a bricks and mortar baseball reference might be the Wrigley Field ivy covered brick outfield wall, but there’s no baseball banter with this brew. Left Field, our favourite ballpark brewers are busy rhyming up a Bricks and Mortar Coffee Porter for us and I can’t wait to sample this fielder’s choice. The best coffee I ever had was on Ethiopian Airlines on the way to Addis Ababa, which, by the way, is one of the most fun capital cities in the world to say. Addis Ababa, sounds like a Disney character. Time to see if this is one of the best coffee porters I’ve ever had.
A black brick body with a light tan mortar head, looks like a solid piece of construction to me. Great roasted malt sweet aroma, not as much coffee on the nose as I expected. Whatever coffee wasn’t on the nose showed up in the taste, but with the coffee comes a surprising whip cream sweet taste. As Neil Gaiman would say, “Black as night sweet as sin.” * The sweet tails off a bit, but not much, while the espresso stays strong. The combo makes for a nice full mouthfeel and a sweet smooth finish.
What I liked was the full flavoured porter, great coffee taste but not overpowering. What was over the top started as a sweet surprise but bordered on cloying, and the sweetness started to get to me after a while.
