When it comes to fashion, I know that plaid on plaid is a go to for us COM but I was unaware that black is the new red. Of course, there was that time in the bowling alley, and then the Shillow beer of the month club incident. Could this “red” be another case of mistaken identity? Because it pours as black as black shellac and is doing its best stout impersonation in my glass.
Westport has me reminiscing about the Rideau Lakes, bass fishing in the cedar strip with the old man way back in the day. “You catch it, you clean it” he would tell me, an early lesson in responsibility. The old man didn’t teach me much about beer though, I had to learn that on my own.
As for this black is the new red Red, as previously noted, a pour as black as an undertaker’s wardrobe. Minimal head to offset the max black. It smells like it looks, a tasty stout aroma of roasted malt and cocoa. An almost 7% solution, if it is indeed 7%, this a high octane “red” for sure. First taste is a roasted malt and cocoa sweet with a strong wine boozy finish, like a semi-imperial porter, and although not a red by any stretch of my imagination*, it is quite tasty. The initial strong finish mellowed and it has morphed into a nice porter, a Baltic porter perhaps? Perhaps. Now it’s getting sweet on me and taking on a stout like countenance. This brew is bouncing around like Tigger and everywhere it lands it hits the spot.
If you enjoy a good dark brew like I do this Red gone black is a nice surprise.
