No, it’s not a typo. We aren’t having a good ol’ Friday boil up in the woods of Baie Verte. It’s “Boii” as in “boii oh boii am I ever thirsty”.*
I had a great idea. What if the bartender at Bridgewater operated the lift bridge over the Welland Canal with one of the draft taps at the bar. Happy hour sure would be interesting. That bridge would be up and down more than gas prices in Canada. Especially if it was their Baa-Rista Stout, which garnered a super high super suds rating in our books. Ok, so maybe I will never be a city traffic planner,** but I do plan to review this brew.
My chilled pils glass is a tall boy two pour. Usually there is no need to explain this but the first pour of this one was crystal clear, the second was milky murky. What that means is not immediately apparent and seems to have had no bearing whatsoever on the taste. A clean fresh malt aroma with a hint of the old Bohemian apple orchard in there.
The taste is mild malt and crisp dry from start to a crispy cracklin’ slightly bitter finish. A touch of an acetic esthetic in the tail end. The taste is pretty consistent start to finish, a classic pils with an extra dry bitter conclusion. The finish was more than I bargained for and would be most appealing to the bitter crowd.
*Editor’s Comment: No, it isn’t. The word “Boii” is a reference to a Celtic people who settled in the area historically known as Bohemia. The etymology of name “Bohemia” comes from the word “Boii”, which meant either “the herding people” or “the warrior people”. Earliest historical references to them as a clan are 390 BC with the Gallic invasion of Italy when they conquered Felsina.
