Broken Record

Publican House tells us that “finding a broken record in your collection is never fun.”  What I hoped would be fun was finding a Broken Record Porter in my beer fridge collection. One can hope.

My record collection has Aerosmith to Zappa, Styx and Stones, the White Stripes and the Black Keys. I wouldn’t call it extensive, and it’s certainly not pristine enough to be worth anything. They are records that are made to be played hard. Some skips and scratches, they are all definitely broke in but they ain’t broken. Time to spin this porter and see how it plays.

A porter pour as black as pressed vinyl is music to my ears. A deep dark malt roast with a cocoa toast aroma catches my eye. First taste is a thin sharp and watery mouthfeel with a full roast malt and extra cocoa for a harsh dark chocolate ground coffee bitterness. A strong ass kickin’ coming straight from my tulip glass. This is definitely not a big swigger, small to mid-quaffs recommended. It has a strong harsh liquor like countenance, a touch and a half too much. I was hoping for some mellowness, but we all know that hope is not a plan. It stayed harsh from first wince to last grimace.

It’s like you are hoping for Zeppelin and you get some Greta van Fleet, harsh and shrieky and trying too hard.

Publican’s Square Nail was top of the charts, a gold record.* But this porter is a B-side single, B-side as in it’s not the hit, and single as in I’m not having another.

*Editor’s Comment: Publican’s Square Nail Pale Ale won the gold medal at the 2023 Canadian Brewing Awards. Contrary to this review, Broken Record won a silver medal at the 2024 awards.
