It turns out a Brut IPA isn’t simply a buffed up version of your regular IPA. No, this is a new type of IPA that is gaining popularity – although I’m not sure why.

The Brut IPA from Nine Locks is supposed to be “bone dry, lighter in color compared to other IPAs and effervescent and sparkling.” Well, I can see that would make it distinctive, but sounds more like champagne or cider. Let’s not forget we’re talking about beer here. We could run an ad campaign featuring “this Brut’s for you …” and frankly that would be fine with me. I’d prefer to give this drink away and have myself a beer.

Actually it wasn’t bad at all, but the characteristics of a Brut IPA that they went to great lengths to create in this bevy are not traits that appeal to me. The light taste felt like a lack of flavour to me. The initial taste is fine, but there was no follow through that you expect from an IPA. The best thing I can say is that it is a thirst quencher. The light colour and clean taste might fool you into thinking your drinking a light lager with a lot of bubbles.

Nothing wrong with this beer at all. But for a strong IPA  I can get a lot more taste elsewhere. I might save the Brut for a hot summer day at the cottage when I’m not looking for full flavour – just some refreshing hoppiness.
