Georgetown Legend

Chicken Man Pale Ale

Furnace Room Brewery

5.4% Alcohol

When I saw the name Chicken Man I immediately thought of Colonel Sanders*. However, the legend of the Chicken Man according to Furnace Brewery is of a Georgetown Ontario resident who used to ride around on his bike (looks like an Amsterdam 3 Speed to me) with his chicken on board. I wonder if the chicken man’s chicken would get a little nervous riding past 249 Guelph Street.**

A golden yellow pour, chicken beak coloured, a bit hazy. Not much head and minimal aroma, very light with some fruit noticeable.  First swig was fizzy with a bit of bitter, refreshing. There is some fruit in there too. The fizz lingers. Good light fruit flavour, as I work down my glass, as I am prone to do. The bitter is almost gone. But wait, a little more bitter returning toward the tail end of the chicken, chicken butt bitters.

Reminiscent of a cross between a West Coast Style IPA and a session IPA. A nice refreshing pale ale.

*Editor’s Comment: Sanders has a very interesting history, including at one point shooting a competitor. He was arrested and charged but aquitted. Don’t mess with the Colonel. Harland Sanders was born in Henrysville, Indiana, just a short jaunt from Louisville Kentucky. So where do you think the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened? Maybe Louisville, or Lexington. Perhaps Richmond, or even Georgetown (Kentucky, not Ontario)? No, it was Salt Lake City, Utah, 1,589 miles from Louisville, in 1952. Go figure. And yes, he was a real (honorary) Colonel.

**Editor’s Comment: The KFC location in Georgetown, Ontario.
