Silver Islet Mine Shaft in Need of Dewatering

I was trying to add some culture to my grandkids lives and started reading the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Treasure Island” to them.  Although there were pirates, fighting, gruesome deaths and treasure, unfortunately there were no minions or farting animals in the book so they quickly lost interest. But I remembered the immortal words of Van Halen “finish what ya’ started” * and so I did finish the book and I understand why it is a classic that has stood the test of time, even without Grue confidantes or gas passing bovines.

A book about Skeleton Island** seemed a good segue into this Sleeping Giant Skull Rock review. Both had buried treasure and a “rich” and “storied” past.***

A picture perfect stout pour, nice and thick. As black as Long John Silver’s heart and the flag he flies.

A textbook tan topper which settled quickly. A mild stout aroma peaked my anticipation.  The taste is a full roasted malt with coffee and sweet cocoa, a bit of bitters delivered by a dark chocolate finish. This oatmeal stout could also pass for a chocolate stout. In fact, Sleeping Giant tells us we can have this brew for breakfast or dessert. Great balance, it all comes together well. Just like Treasure Island, this one is a classic.

*Editor’s Comment: "Finish What Ya Started" is a song by Van Halen taken from their 1988 album “OU812”. Of course, the song isn’t about finishing a good book. Sammy Hagar summed up the theme of his lyrics in two words, “blue balls”.

**Editor’s Comment: Although early in the book the island that Flint has buried his pirate’s treasure on is known as Skeleton Island, as the book goes on Jim Hawkins calls it Treasure Island. Some scholars theorize that Stevenson called the book Treasure Island as it may have been a more popular name and increased sales.

***Editor’s Comments: Probably the most famous skull rock is the one in California at Joshua Tree National Park. More likely the Skull Rock that Sleeping Giant is referring to is on Silver Islet near Thunder Bay. Between 1870 and 1884 over three million dollars in silver was mined from the skull-shaped island rock, a small outcropping in Lake Superior. Buried treasure so to speak. It was one of Ontario’s earliest mines and the world’s leading silver producer in it’s day. Today the remnants of the mine can still be seen, including a submerged mine shaft.
