The Craft Beer Market

Bright lights, big city. Downtown in the Little Apple called for a visit to the Craft Beer Market to check out their extensive menu, and maybe have something to eat too. When they heard that COMDB were in the house they brought out their special menu,* and true to form they have an awesome selection of mainly local crafts. I counted 135 and I am sure there were a few more. One of their selections, in fact their only cream ale, is today’s review, a gold medal award winner** from Anderson’s.

But what to eat? Now I am in pursuit of the perfect pairing, but I can’t handle spicy foods, I don’t even like sweating the details.  So I double check as to how peppery the salt and pepper wings are, the cheerful and helpful server assures me they are not spicy, no sweat.

My 0.4 litre shaker glass*** of golden cream ale arrives and it appears to be glowing, and clear, and clearly excited to be in a COMDB review. A slim white cream coloured head, rising to the top as I hear the cream often does. Light malt aroma with a hint of fruit or sweet? It has a very nice smooth creamy mouthfeel, which not all cream ales do despite their moniker. Middling malt body, slight sweet crisp finish.  A very tasty cream ale.  Smooth, mild, nice malt flavour with a very faint back end bitter and a crisp dry finish. Definitely creamy, maybe Andersons has a sweet old beer cow, you know, the ones with the big eye lashes that flutter when they get milked, or in this case beered. Of course they do.

Great service at the Craft, busy and noisy, the wings went well with (unintended alliteration) the cream ale, a perfect pairing for sure.

*Editor’s Comment: I'm guessing with a surcharge for using a table for four and drinking alone.

**Editor’s Comment: A gold medal winner at the 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards.

***Editor’s Comment: Shaker glasses typically hold less than a pint, usually 12 ounces or 355ml. On the menu they state that this brew is a 0.4 litre draw. A US Pint is 473 ml (16 ounces), an Imperial pint is 568 ml (20 ounces).

Final Rating: This Cream Rose to the Top at 16 out of 20
