Welcome to the Women’s Pen. The Matron will see you now.
In the 70’s I had a tour of the Women’s Penitentiary in Kingston. * Scary place, reminiscent of the Ken Kesey cuckoo’s nest psychiatric ward. ** Why such a seemingly arbitrary segue into a Matron’s double? Well the reason I took that tour was a friend of mine’s Mother worked there, she was a Matron! What they called the women guards at the Women’s pen. I know, it’s still a relatively irrelevant intro, but that’s how I roll.
Matron Fine Beer has nothing to do with incarcerations, and everything to do with libations and hydration. They tell us this is a double dare IPA of fresh fruit with some dank in the tank. Good news, because often the life of a beer reviewer is a dankless task. ***
A golden semi clear pour, the glass giving us the one finger froth. It has a tangy hoppy almost sour aroma happening, dank perhaps? First taste is juicy to hoppy bitters, smooth with a full mouthfeel, it is an 8% but no double trouble so far. The pillowy mouthfeel delivers mellow citrus tropical notes with a some malt body to middlin’ pine bitters. Balanced, and smooth, an IPA lover’s IPA, and not at all aggressive like some doubles. An accessible, enjoyable, and quite doable double. Another fine Matron beer.
