Let’s step into Mr. Peabody’s WABAC* (Wayback) machine and go back to a time when people like the dude on the beer can were listening to tunes on their IPods. Wait a minute, I’m still listening to tunes on my IPod. That’s not going back. How about when we were kids and playing our 45’s instead of our parents 78s. Then 8 tracks came out and nothing was ever the same, we were no longer at the mercy of our car radio, we could play our music, in stereo no less! Rockin’ out to Machine Head in my 69 Valiant with the slant 6. Now I am digressing and reminiscing, that’s a bad sign.
The term Wayback Playback also refers to nostalgia concerts, groups we knew and loved from the past gracing our arenas one more time on their 7th farewell tour. Maybe the most famous playback is in the movie Casablanca when Rick (Humphrey Bogart) after seeing Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) asks Sam (Dooley Wilson) to “Play it, Sam” referring to the movie’s theme song, “As Time Goes By”.
Oops, digressing and reminiscing again. Where was I? Oh yea, beer review. And of course it refers to this beer and Sawdust City’s brewer going “way back” to the first time he ever tried an IPA. I remember the first time I tried a juicy ass IPA. It was called Juicy Ass IPA.
This West Coast IPA has a golden slightly hazy pour with more bubbles than alkie-seltzer. Hazy partly from all the bubbles. An effervescent pour. Bubbles** in Trailer Park Boys is mildly amusing but this fizzy and busy has me concerned. Did I mention it has lots of bubbles? Mild hops in the aroma with some citrus fruit. First swig was a mild and mellow body with a nice mouthfeel. Not hoppy but some tart pine bitter on the finish. Not at all fizzy which surprised me since my glass is still bubbling away like the proverbial witches cauldron.
Note to self, the steaks took one Wayback Playback to cook including time for the BBQ to heat to sear plus status. The Missus complimented my BBQ performance today when she said “They aren’t as burnt as usual.” I’ll take it.
A nice West Coast IPA, mellow fruit and hops with some bitters to put a pine bow (bough) on the package.
