Dog Day Afternoon Brew

Wizard Wolf

Bellwoods Brewery

Catchy name that Wizard Wolf, and it got me ruminating and pondering if a wolf was a wizard what wizardly deeds would he do? We all know from Harry Potter that you’re not a real wizard unless you’re casting spells. So I got thinking about what HP spells a wolf wizard would cast. Maybe Harry’s “Arresto Momentum” spell, a slow-motion potion, would slow down a rabbit enough for a leisurely chase. Or how about the “Engorgio” spell to make the moon much bigger for those midnight howls. And of course the classic invisibility spell would be handy for practical jokes on the rest of the pack. For my own purposes Harry’s Refilling Spell (yes he really had one of those) would come in handy whenever I sampled a brew I really enjoyed. Let’s see if I would cast that spell on this brew.

A hazy bright yellow pour with a thin white frosting. A definite hoppy citrus aroma, lemon or grapefruit or both? The first swig is hoppy fresh with some tart on the finish, a bit of fizz with the tart. Lemon yellow and lemony citrus makes for a very refreshing and tart finish. A very fresh and refreshing dog day afternoon* brew I am quaffing at the end of a long hot day. Enjoyable in the evening, but it would hit the spot even better sitting in the mid-day sun**.

*Editor’s Comment: Dog day afternoon is an idiom that refers to the hottest time of the day in mid-summer when even the dogs slept under the porch in the shade. Not sure about wolves, or wizardly ones for that matter. “Dog Day Afternoon” is also the name of a 1975 movie starring Al Pacino based on a true story of a bank robbery turned hostage situation at a Brooklyn bank in 1972. Frank Pierson won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

**Editor’s Comment: "Sitting in the Midday Sun" is a 1973 song by British rock band The Kinks, written by Ray Davies. It was included on their album “Preservation Act 1”. Otis Redding and Steve Cropper wrote “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” in which Otis was sitting in the morning sun, the timing of which is more amenable to quaffing a coffee than a cold one.
