From downtown Toronto to the shipyards of Vancouver, I’m on the East to West armchair express. Sampling this West Coast brew called East of the Sun from North Point breweries and with no sense of direction this review is going South pretty quick. But the name of this brew did remind me of a summer job I had almost half a century ago in the mines of Northern BC.
Cranky Old Shift Boss: Where you from kid.
Summer Student (Me): Ontario, sir.
Cranky Old Shift Boss: The only good thing to come out of the East is the sun.
Of course, East of the sun means nighttime, and that sounds like the right time, the quaff a pint time.* That’s right, it’s pour and score time.
This brew certainly has a sunny disposition, a light bright orange sunrise with a nice bright white head looking over an os so hazy body. A just right fruit hop aroma, mild and enticing. The taste is a pillowy haze of tropical fruit, a full mouthfeel with a mild hoppy back bite, more a nibble than a bite with an ever so slight afterburner of an aftertaste. Smooth, with a nice balance of fruit and hops, some subtle grapefruit bitters add to the enjoyment, very tasty. And next thing you know my East of the Sun was done.
This East coast IPA from this West coast brewer lit up my night.
