Draft Anderson Cream Ale vs Anderson Cream Ale, which will prevail? Beer war! Which one will “tap” out? Usually I quaff and take notes, last night’s brew, today’s review. But I am typing while tasting tonight since tomorrow is none other than the third annual COMDB AGM (annual golf meeting) and the day will be full with the business of the day, that being bad golf and good beer. So one and done tonight. I have to pace myself for the AGM where it will be one and begun until we are all done.
Team Anderson tell us that this is a Pre-prohibition style ale. Since the prohibition in Canada ran from the late 1800’s to the early 1900s** even Farmer Steve wasn’t around then. The word is that pre-prohibition beers were bitter pale lagers with some sweetness from corn.
So we are back on the farm with Anderson and team and their back-to-basics beer naming. Maybe COMDB can help them out with a few beer name suggestions. Fresh from the farm, how about “Cream of the Hop Crop”. Or an oblique reference to The Matrix “ I’m Going to Enjoy Your Cream Ale, Mr.Anderson.”* Or a historical reference “A Pre-Prohibition Pint Post Prohibition, Perhaps?” Don’t worry, there are more great names where they came from. **
A golden pour, the head gone as quickly as a dirty sock on laundry day. Malt aroma, no hops, no fruit.
A refreshing sequence of malt bitters and sweet in that order. The sweet and crisp bitter combo is interesting. Full malt with a bit of sweet and a crisp ale finish. Full flavour but easy drinking, or maybe I’m just thirsty, most likely a little of both. Rough and ready big swigs yield the full malt flavour. I would have to say the can has more bitters than the draft, but both work well.
Beer war over, and the winner is …. Me. Because both brews are great.
