O'Hara's Leann Folláin

Carlow Brewing Co.

6% Alcohol

Leann Folláin” sounds like a Galway girl to me, with raven black hair and eyes of blue. But the Carlow crew tell us that it’s actually a Gaelic phrase for “wholesome stout”. * O’Hara’s Irish Nitro Stout was oh so good, I thought to myself would their Extra be too much of a good thing? Of course, it was Mae West who more than once said “too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”

Guinness brews an extra stout but at 5% and 330ml it doesn’t seem as “extra” as O’Hara’s at 6% and 500ml. ** Is bigger better? Mae West probably had a comment about that too. ***

A dashing and devilishly dark pour, devoid of any foam or froth encumbrances. A strong cocoa coffee stout aroma, an Irish stout with something extra. First taste is full flavoured  cocoa espresso with some lingering bitters, a maximum flavoured stout. It mellows a bit and what started out as almost too much evolves into the stout you always want to have, lots of great flavour with a smooth finish. The extra could be short for extra ABV or extra  mls but I think it must be short for extra special.

*Editor’s Comment: “Leann” is Irish Gaelic for ale or beer while “Folláin” means wholesome or healthy or beneficial.

**Editor’s Comment: Corona Extra is only 330 ml too, less that a typical “stubby” of 354ml (12 ounces) or the more common “tall boy” these days of 473ml (16ounces).

***Editor’s Comment: Mae West: "How tall are you big boy?" Man: "Six foot nine inches!" Mae West: "Let's go up to my place and talk about the nine inches!"
