After a ski weekend with the grandkids I was in dire need of an energy drink of some sort and Rocket Fuel sounded like just the ticket for an out of this world experience. We know that our Old Comrade Frank is one smooth Hoperator so I had some sky high hopes for this rocket ride.
Frank wasn’t saying Relax * this time, he tells us this one “wasn’t brewed for subtlety, it was brewed for acceleration”. I strapped myself into the ol’ lazy boy and braced myself for impact.
A Cold IPA, lagered and lathered with a shaving cream head. It appeared that the head wasn’t going to settle for just anyone, me included. After an exceedingly long countdown we finally had the froth lift off. A juicy fruit aroma permeating through the foam, with some sharp dangerous hops in the background. The first taste is nice tropical juice with some contrary flat bitters. Not grapefruit or pine, just bitter. Not an ideal one two punch. Juice to bitters and nothing else there, which ends up creates competing rather than complementary flavours. It starts to come into balance eventually but I just wish the bitters were grapefruit rather than malt funk.
I’m not over the moon for this one, they did warn me it wouldn’t be subtle and they were right about that. Solid good fruit flavour, and unsubtle backend bitters.
