Get Lucky

Daft Brewing Co. and Merit Brewing Co.

Can you point that thing somewhere else, please.

“You’ve gotta ask yourself a question: ”Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?”  *

I sure wouldn’t be feeling lucky with a steely eyed Dirty Harry sticking a 44 magnum in my face, no matter how many shots I thought he had fired. But I do feel lucky pouring a Get Lucky Irish Stout from our favourite flamingo fronted brewer, the Daft brew crew, and their collab craft partner Merit. K-Town and Steel Town getting down to business. **

“The way my luck is running, if I was a politician I would be honest.” Rodney Dangerfield

How about a St. Patrick’s Day theme for a New Year’s Eve celebration. Isn’t that the trend these days, going green? Celebrating with the luck of the Irish sounds like a good way to kick off a new year. Although I’m not to sure how lucky the Irish are, they had that potato famine and Bono too, didn’t they.***

“If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all.” Cousin Joe ****

Time to get to Get Lucky. As black as a blackjack Ace and King of Spades, but no head on these face cards. The malt roast, the cocoa, it’s all there on the nose. First taste is cocoa light malt with some backend cocoa bitters, very nice.  Enough cocoa to appreciate and enjoy,  but not quite enough to call it a chocolate stout. A lighter mouthfeel than some stouts, not a creamy nitro, more of a black lager consistency, not Throwing Shade there, just stating the facts. Great flavour, nice balance, a black beauty.

Looks like all my bad luck has just run out. A Daft shout out for their tasty stout which Merits not only consideration, but high praise as well.

*Editor’s Comment: The complete quote is “You’re thinking “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Now to tell you the truth, I’ve forgotten myself in all this excitement. But being this is a 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow your head clean off, you’ve gotta ask yourself a question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk? From the 1971 movie “Dirty Harry” starring Clint Eastwood. It spawned four sequels.

**Editor’s Comment: Daft is based in Kingston and Merit is based in Hamilton.

***Editor’s Comment: As far as the luck of the Irish goes, after plagues, Viking attacks, Anglo-Norman conquests and reconquests, rebellions, revolutions, indentured labour, famines, and the IRA unrest and battles with England, it’s not clear how lucky the Irish are. And yes, Bono and his band U2 are from Dublin, Ireland.

****Editor’s Comment: The 1947 recording of “Bad Luck Blues” by Joseph Pleasant (aka Cousin Joe) and Sammy Price contains the lyric “If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have no luck at all”. Since that time a number of songs have used that catch phrase, most famously Booker T. Jones and William Bell’s “Born Under a Bad Sign” originally recorded by Albert King in 1967 and then Cream’s 1968 cover.
